Member story – 5 reasons to see a Personal Trainer

Have you ever experienced Personal Training? Or not sure what it could possibly do for you, or how you would benefit from it?

What makes it different to Group Training?

Here’s a few wise words from one of our movers Abbey Moore, who has done Personal Training with Movement HQ co-founder Mark Glanville for almost 9 years …

“Currently I see Mark once a week, and I also do 3 to 4 Movement HQ classes per week, across Kettlebells, Bodyweight Strength (blue floor), Reformer Pilates and Movement Strength.

When I do Personal Training with Mark we mainly focus on conditioning (but we don’t call it that or I won’t do it! HAHAHA).Immediately when we started all those years ago, he worked out what made me “tick”- how he could get the best out of me at every session.

He identified that I trained in one movement plane – lifting weights generally up and down. Even from those early days he had me doing movements that challenged my range of motion, stability and MY MIND.

Why do I CHOOSE to do Personal Training with Mark, in addition to doing classes? Because it certainly is a choice to have someone challenge you every time you see them …

He takes me to the next level

As soon as something gets too comfortable, he will “up the anti” – adding weight, time under tension, throw in a BOSU – anything to progress and to challenge not just my body but to my neurological pathways.

It didn’t take him very long to work out what I enjoy doing and hence found “easy”. He’d then mix those movements in with things I loath (chin-ups anyone?).

Over the years I have come to realise that it is more important to train the things you don’t enjoy or aren’t “good at” until you enjoy them… very much a Mark mentality!

He knows what I’m capable of

There is nothing I love to hear more from him than “YES!” Or “Perfect” or even “you beast!”.

Because I know he has prescribed these movements based on MY ability and what MY body can do and has only suggested them because he knows I can do them – it’s me who doubts myself.

I can do more things with my body

The things I can do! WOW! I thought I was training well BEFORE, but now.

Even though I may be cursing the movement (never him!) while doing it, I am so proud of the things my body can do! Which I truly believe is only because of my sessions with Mark.

When I started I had a badly injured calf muscle – I couldn’t run or jump (SHAME haha). Mark worked around it whilst also focussing on rehab and repair. We now have no calf pain. Currently I have a “cranky” ankle, which again we are working with – through instability exercises to strengthen it in all ranges of movement.

My training is comprehensive and complete

Some words I hear often when we train – range of motion, rotation, extension, awareness, stability – these really exemplify his style of PT. Functionality and entirety. Being aware of where your body is in space.I have always enjoyed moving, and as I have gotten older have identified that it really does help my state of mind too.

And walking away from a tough, challenging session with Mark certainly helps me function throughout a day and a week.

On the flip side, when I have tired days, he can pick up on that and we do slower paced, mobility work.I can honestly say I am fitter now, more functional across all planes and genuinely excited for what Mark has in store for me each week.

Personal Training allows you to see what you are truly capable of, to try new movements and to challenge yourself.

And the 5th reason …

Mark has the most childish sense of humour, which has finally come into its element now he is allowed to say “dad jokes” … I think he takes this role very seriously!

His interaction with all members and clients, young and old, is a testament to his caring nature and desire to make people happy.

He is always open to hearing about my children and offering pearls of wisdom, because we were all “ratbags” once! And I know he genuinely does care.

Seeing him with his daughter Stevie Rose and the twinkle he gets when talking about her, and his wife Amy, speaks to the sensitive, gentle (albeit pushy) giant he is.

Meet our fabulous Movers of the Month

Every day, right here on our gym floor, we observe wins and successes as our members stick to their training, try new things and reach new heights.

Whilst we are proud of every single member who trains at MHQ, here are our Movers of the Month who make us proud and pleased as punch that we do what we do.

December 2023 – Maria

From Mark Glanville: “Maria, I can not explain how long it took Maria to actually finally drag herself in to attend her first class after what seemed like months of answering questions online and trying my best to convince her just to ‘come on in and have a crack, I promise you’ll love us’.

Navigating inflammation throughout her body, fighting pain and discomfort on the journey to working out what actually worked best for her, and building on it … and here she is!

10kg lighter, doing movements she would never have tried or thought of ever achieving under our guidance, and giving everything it takes to be successful at reaching her goals and then some.

Congratulations Maria, we all can not wait to see what 2024 brings for you! Keep up the inspiring work.”

From Maria:

“My favourite class is the Rings and Stallbars class … I love that I have achieved the impossible from 6 months ago, with Sarah’s guidance and giving me the confidence to just give it a go.

I joined Movement HQ when I saw the Body Composition Program advertised … I knew I had to try it out. My body was in a bad state (spasming ribs). I had to do something to change.

The impact MHQ has had on my life is massive. I can now participate in all classes without worry, I have been able to challenge myself with different classes along the way, like Movement Strength – lifting weights with Renato’s guidance. Now I can hang on bars .. love it.

MHQ has changed my life for the better, I am only looking forward to what else I can achieve.

My biggest achievement since I started has been not giving up. Turning up to classes. Getting on the rings which I had always only admired from afar when I started – now I can do it!

Thank you to Sarah for helping me achieve my wish and giving me tips along the way to achieving my goals 💕😍”.

November 2023 – Houri

From Mark Glanville: Houri!! Haha! Her answers will tell you everything. All I can say is the first time I saw her was a Tuesday morning around 5:20am. She was walking toward me as I was plotting the Kettlebell class, she looked at me with a little bit of uncertainty in her eyes and I asked her name and if she was here for the Kettlebell class, she said ‘yes’ and I replied with a subconscious ‘WHOAA! 😂’

Then I quickly recovered and promised I would stay close and guide her through the class and BOOM….. here we are today watching this amazing woman absolutely kill any challenge put in front of her and I am just so proud to be able to claim to be an influence in her progress and how far she has come.

Congrats Houri, you’re an absolute champion!”

From Houri:

“My favourite class? That’s a tough question, it’s so hard to choose!

I would have to say Kettlebell. This was the first class I ever did at MHQ having not exercised for months and months and I had no idea what I was in for. It was such a challenging class which needed a much higher level of fitness and technique than I had at the time, but Mark and the whole class were so supportive and encouraging and got me through it! I now look forward to this class each week and love seeing the progression I have made each time.

Kettlebell classes at MHQ are cardio without feeling like cardio which is exactly what I need in my life!

I chose MHQ because I saw the Body Composition Program advertised and thought it looked like a really balanced approach to getting fit and healthy again.I also loved the variety of classes available such as functional mobility, strength, pilates, yin yoga and more.

I have been a member of various ‘big’ gym chains for years and I found I basically donated money to them each month without stepping foot inside the gym. This gym is completely different, I look forward to getting up at 4:45am each morning to prepare for a 5:30am class. Something I never thought I’d ever do!

Everyone is so supportive, friendly and encouraging and the classes are so well designed. It has completely changed my lifestyle for the better.

Since starting in June this year, I’ve lost over 17 kilos (and counting) which is something I’m really proud of but isn’t my best achievement.
My best achievement is the healthy mindset and approach I now have towards exercise and nutrition. I’ve never been one to have exercise part of my routine or life and I think MHQ has definitely changed this for me.

I look forward to coming to each session (maybe other than conditioning) and I’m hopeful this will continue for a lifetime!”

July 2023 – Gina and Laura

From Mark Glanville: This mother and daughter duo, Gina and Laura have been MHQ members since we opened in November 2020.

Gina has been a bit of a work-horse since joining, so much that she trusted Mark’s guidance on training around quite a severe hamstring tear.

Rather than suspending her membership and sitting around waiting for it to heal, she continued with her training which is a testament to her trust in us, and also her desire to keep working hard.

As for Laura, a young girl at the start, somewhat a little precious at times 😂 she has turned from everything being too hard to having an absolute crack and pushing through what would have most probably broken her 2-1/2 years ago!

We are super proud of both of these awesome ladies, but Laura’s change is astonishing and we are proud to have helped her find herself and the grit to push through her comfort zone and better herself physically and mentally.

From Gina:

My favourite class is Pilates.

I chose MHQ because a friend of mine (Daphne) spoke about it and explained the ethos of the gym and it sounded like a good fit for me.

I think that it has impacted my life in many positive ways.

I am stronger (I can now do a number of pulls up in a row) which is good for me at my age. I have also met lots of wonderful people who are so positive and encouraging. The community is amazing.

My biggest achievement would be doing chin ups with a weight tied around my waist.

I really would never have thought I was that person who could do that.

From Laura:

My favorite class is Movement Strength I love weight training!

I chose Movement HQ because Daphne introduced my mum and I, and spoke so highly of it.

Honestly the whole mindset and values behind the gym are what has made me stay.

The trainers are all amazing and everyone is so encouraging. The gym can be an intimidating place but to be surrounded by such encouraging people is amazing. It really is a community gym.

I also love going to the gym with my mum. She’s such a role model for me and I’m constantly amazed at her strength and what she can do.

I think for me I just feel so much stronger and fitter. I have also gained confidence in myself and my body which I think is so important as a young woman. I’m so excited to continue my fitness journey at MHQ!

May 2023 – Emma

From Mark Glanville:  She’s one of the lads! Haha, loves Tuesday night Metal sessions with Sarah and I and the banter the boys bring to the blue floor!

I’m not sure Emzy has taken a day off since starting at MHQ 🤔 dabbling in almost every class possible sometimes at 5:30am and sometimes at 5:30pm, even rocking up for testing at 8am on a Sunday after a night out till 3am.

Em you are an absolute trooper, cheeky, fun and we just adore having you in our family. Rock on Emma and keep up the awesome work 🤘

From Emma:

It’s hard to pick just one favourite class as they are all great but right now it would have to be Handstands, it’s challenging but so much fun!

I was sold from the very first class I went to at Movement HQ. The coaches are so knowledgeable and welcoming.

The different types of classes offered and the encouragement from the coaches and every person who goes to MHQ is unlike any other gym I have been to.

It’s had such a great impact on my life, not just physically but mentally too. I had actually been following MHQ for around 12 months before finding the courage to try it out.

I feel like I have found a lot of confidence since coming here and am much more open to trying new things as a result.

My best achievement at MHQ has definitely been how consistent I have been, I never thought I’d be the sort of person that enjoyed going to the gym and now I attend 7+ classes a week and wouldn’t have it any other way!

April 2023 – David

From Mark Glanville: David, the smiling gentle giant. In his early days David popped in to reception wanting to cancel a class because he’d hurt his shoulder over the weekend so I dragged him onto the gym floor, applied a bit of trigger point release and some coaches some activation work and boom he was back in the class killing it.

Now it seems nothing can hold the big man back, squatting more than ever, hitting calisthenics skills he never would have thought he could achieve and all while being super friendly, extremely helpful and supportive to other members and just an absolute pleasure to have in the MHQ family!

Congrats big fella, well deserved! 👊🏼

From David: My favourite class is Bodyweight Strength.

I chose MHQ firstly because of location (I was working next door). I haven’t worked there for a while but I have stayed at MHQ because of the community of people and the quality of trainers. It is literally the first gym I have enjoyed going to.

The best achievement for me is actually enjoying a gym and staying at the same gym for longer than 6 months … that, and being able to do chin ups and dips.

October 2022 – Karren

From MHQ: Polite, punctual and super sweet Karren. What an absolute trooper, coming in to have a look around because she liked the look of what we had to offer and boy has she dabbled!

Karren’s a super member in that she has really adopted a wide range of classes and is doing everything from strength through to mobility, yoga and Reformer Pilates.

This is the kind of training approach that we try and promote with every member and she has made us very proud! Good on you Karren, keep up the fantastic work and we look forward to helping you achieve more little wins on the future 😃

From Karren: My favourite class is yin yoga. I love how it creates space in your body. I chose MHQ because it offers a great range of modalities in a beautiful modern studio. All the trainers are very knowledgeable, supportive of the level you are at, and always greet you with a smile.

Since starting at MHQ I have more energy, better posture and balance, move easily and it’s great to feel stronger.

I love working in my garden and I was finding it difficult to lift bags of potting mix and move pots. Not anymore.

My best achievement has been to step out of my exercise comfort zone ( yoga & Pilates) and start doing body weight and movement strength classes.

September 2022 – Nick

From MHQ: Nick, our softly spoken giant is the perfect example of ‘do the the work, the right work and things will improve’ Nick was open to our advice from day 1 and it has paid off significantly.

He’s gone from focusing purely on mobility and Bodyweight Strength to our Bodyweight skills classes, our Movement Strength, Yoga and Reformer Pilates classes.

Nick has hugely improved in strength (notably his chin-ups!), greater mobility and less pain which are all due to following a more global approach to his training.

This is exactly what we try to promote with all our MHQ members. Congrats Nicko, well deserved mate.

From Nick: My favourite class is Functional mobility, I always like the way I feel after this class, I feel like a lot of tension and stiffness gets released.

I did try a Yin Yoga class last week which was amazing and could be a strong contender for my favourite class. I also feel I’m getting a lot of benefit from the Reformer Pilates class.

I chose MHQ as the classes are smaller, well designed and adaptable from complete beginner to expert. I had a significant back injury in my early 20s which ended up with two surgeries to fuse my lower spine and since then I have been dealing with chronic back pain and sciatica.

I have tried multiple gyms and physio guided exercise and it was all quite repetitive and boring, meaning I often lost interest and let everything slide.

After meeting with Mark and discussing my issues he recommended a program of which classes to attend and after the trial period I felt this was right for me. Having skills to work towards with many levels of progression helps keep it interesting with goals to aim for.

My favourite exercise is chin ups. I haven’t been able to do chin ups for a long time. After many months of training I just grabbed the bar one day and was able to do 5 chin ups in a row which was a big surprise for me.

It has been a big boost to my motivation as I can now see that if I keep turning up I will be able to push my body to do things I thought I would never be able to do. Since starting at MHQ my body in general feels stronger, more stable and my mood has improved.

My base line pain levels are now lower and I have learnt techniques to relive the pain when I get flair ups. I have two young daughters and my pain was affecting my ability to play with them, now I’m getting close to keeping up with them and hopefully they will have to try and keep up with me.

I am also teaching them some of the exercises I do at MHQ to help them with their fitness development.

OCTOBER 2022 – KARREN

AUGUST 2022 – IZZY

From MHQ: Izzy has been an advocate for bodyweight skills & mobility training for many years. Her dedication and consistency is evident when you see how polished and elegant she makes her skills look. Izzy trains 6-7 mornings a week. She’s strong, flexible and has an undeniable eagerness to learn more every session.

We feel very lucky to have her as one of our movers. She’s an inspiration to not only her three kids but everyone else around her!

From Izzy: I have so many favourite classes! For the fun, I like the Handstand class. I just love being up-side-down. For the challenge, Rings/Stall bars and Body weight classes. It takes so long to achieve something and I have to work so hard. When I finally get it, it feels bloody good. Functional Mobility is my feel good class.

THE KIND OF TRAINING/CLASSES AND THE COACHING TEAM ARE THE MAIN REASONS WHY I PICKED MHQ. TO ME, IT’S A GAME CHANGER WHEN I WORK WITH PEOPLE THAT, NOT ONLY KNOW THEIR STUFF, BUT ALSO CAN TRANSFER THEIR KNOWLEDGE. IT JUST KEEPS ME MOTIVATED TO COME TO CLASSES.

With all the disruptions and challenges of current times, I found that being consistent with my training was one big achievement.

JULY 2022 – STACKY

From MHQ: Stacky, the Ox probably takes the cake for the best grunt at MHQ and we think he’s kinda proud of that

Stacky has been here since day dot and has transformed himself during his time here participating regularly in our Movement Strength, Kettlebells, Animal Flow, Yoga and Saturday Mish Mash while also managing to lose over 9 Kilos in our first weight loss challenge.

Congratulations buddy, you are an absolute gentleman and a champion and we are proud to have you an integral part of the MHQ family.

From Stacky: All of the MHQ classes are my favourite. I really enjoy the HIIT classes with Tori and Leo, I am getting much better at Animal Flow with Mark, but my favourite at the moment is Yoga with Laura. I had never done yoga prior to joining MHQ and Laura has made it so easy to learn new skills and techniques which have really helped me with my mobility and health.

I HAVE KNOWN MARK FOR OVER 12 YEARS NOW AND HE ALWAYS MENTIONED IT WAS HIS DREAM TO START MHQ SO HOW COULD I RESIST NOT BEING PART OF HIS JOURNEY. I TRAVEL EVERY MORNING PAST ABOUT 100 GYMS TO GET TO MHQ SO THAT PROBABLY SAYS IT ALL.

It has been the best decision as it has improved my physical and mental health, and I have met some awesome new friends and trainers (and an awesome new drummer for my band.

The weight loss challenge helped me lose 9kg which was definitely my best achievement to date. Now I am able to train and move better.

MHQ Weight Loss Challengers share their stories

What does it take to lose weight successfully?

Over 8 weeks from April 2022, our MHQ Weight Loss Challengers lost an average of 4kg (the highest amount being 10kg).

As they completed the challenge with a sweaty Saturday smasher group workout, we asked our 20 Challengers to share what their motivation was to lose weight, and what worked for them.

We are so proud of the personal goals that were reached and honoured to have been part of their weight loss journeys.

Read on to find out more about the Movement HQ Weight Loss Challenge from our Challengers …

What were your previous obstacles to weight loss success?
  • Social events as there would be lots of alcohol and food, and I would over-eat
  • Portion sizes were mostly too large for me, but I’d always finish what’s on my plate. Since starting this challenge, I’ve been eating much smaller portions and feel satisfied most of the time
  • Consistency – I’d feel good after a week and then fall back into old habits
  • Sticking to a plan and putting positive effort into my well-being
  • Denying myself food to “feel like I’m being good” but in fact just eating the wrong food at the wrong time
  • I found it hard to lose what I call “the last 5 Kilos
  • I’ve just stopped alcohol and lost a bit of weight
  • Eating too much, avoiding the scale as I knew I’d put on weight, unplanned dinners and grabbing kids or processed snacks. Drinking too much booze.

How did your weight impact you?
  • I felt extremely insecure and didn’t feel confident in my own skin. I felt any clothing I put on didn’t look good, which led to me not wanting to hang out with friends or go to dinners with my family. I knew something needed to change
  • I didn’t realize how heavy/big I had gotten. I’d convinced myself that I was fine and healthy and living life. I feel so much better now
  • Having a bad back, it restricts my mobility and causes pain
  • It impacted confidence in certain areas of my life, namely summer. I also wanted to improve my body clock. I was feeling significantly older of late
  • I hated looking in the mirror
  • I felt a bit sluggish and my favourite clothes were getting a little FIRM
  • My clothes felt crap which made me feel down. Also felt out of control as I had no structure.

What helped you most on this Challenge?
  • Having Leo available 24/7 on Messenger or call was extremely helpful as my questions were answered almost immediately
  • The Facebook group gave me delicious meal ideas. The group was also a strong and supportive community that helped encourage each and every one of us to keep going
  • The coaching calls on Monday evenings helped a lot as well, as we were given new information to implement into our routines
  • I’ve relearnt what I knew! Meaning that while I understood one point about 60%, I now have a full understanding of how the pieces all fit together! I’ve learnt that I actually can be lighter and I can get there!

“Leo! All those little messages and little tips and nuggets of encouragement and I felt as though he’s invested in me, why am I not!?

HE believes I can do it, so I must be able to!! That helped sooo much!”

  • The scales!! I was always soooo terrrified of the scales, but now, I see it literally as data
  • Weigh yourself every day, understand you need a “calorie deficit” period and a “maintenance” period,
  • Motivation of the group, accountability to myself given the weigh in before and after
  • Weekly Zoom chat Knowing Leo was available for any questions or concerns and responds immediately.

What was different about the MHQ Weight Loss Challenge compared to others you’d tried?
  • It’s sustainable and having a coach/mentor helps alot as they keep you accountable and provide you with knowledge on the best way to lose weight and how to keep it off
  • LEO! Having someone to build you up, teach you, point you in the right direction when you veer off path. Having the challenge members at the gym kept me accountable.
  • Constant support and encouragement, Leo should be a psychologist. No judgment, relaxed caring support and humour.
  • It’s the first time I’ve done something like this in a group. Usually I do everything on my own, so having to share, be accountable and having that support has been invaluable
  • It was you v you. It wasn’t focused on losing as much weight as possible in x period and competing to win a frikkin prize. It was about being realistic on goal setting and making adjustments to sustain and maintain.
Did this Challenge empower you to maintain your weight loss?
  • Yes. Leo’s been extremely supportive and helpful to every member participating in this challenge. He’s given us so much knowledge that we can take into our everyday lives to help us maintain our goal weight
  • Absolutely! Encouragement all the way, some great info some of which I had not heard before, amazing since I’ve done nearly every diet there is. Mostly support and confidence
  • Absolutely – more so than any other weight loss program or diet.  Leo kept everything really simple but clear. I think we’re always looking for a new, special, different miracle weight loss answer, and that’s why there are so many diets out there – but Leo just bought it all into focus, simplified everything so we can use this for ourselves whenever we need to
  • Yes I did. Certainly empowered.

How would you describe this Challenge?
  • A fun and VERY rewarding program with enormous benefit. I can personally say that I’ve learnt so much during these 8 weeks that I can now apply to my everyday life to maintain a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Weight loss is never easy nor very exciting, although the way this program was structured made the 8 weeks fly by. The weekly Monday evening coaching calls were extremely supportive.
  • EASY! Self explanatory! Confronting at first but so very simple. Worthwhile!
  • Do it! Don’t delay! It is the best fun you can have whilst improving your health.

“Weight loss is rarely a straight line.

Having someone support you whilst you better your own health is fantastic. For someone to do that with kindness and humor is even better!”

  • No crazy workouts. Basic nutrition and expectations set around weight loss. Tools to adjust for the unplanned or nights out
  • A really positive way to learn more about yourself and change bad habits. I’d highly recommend this challenge to friends and family
  • Educational. It’s redefined my understanding of what it is to loss weight and how to do it in the most simplest form
  • It provides accountability and information to give you the best chance of success.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt on this Challenge?
  • I don’t have to starve to lose weight. Before this challenge, I thought I’d have to eat the bare minimum and excessively do cardio, although I’ve learnt now it’s the complete opposite. Throughout these 8 weeks, I have been eating a healthy amount of food and feeling satisfied 99% of the time, and only participating in strength training 4/7 days a week. Doing this, I’ve successfully hit my goal of losing 4+ kg, as well as feeling good in my own body
  • How easy it is. I know it won’t continue that way, but for now, while I need to lose the weight, it’s so simple. I’ve been in my own damn way for the past 20 yrs!
  • To slow down and be more consistent. This shit doesn’t happen overnight but following a correct process, it does work. Thankyou Leo, I’ll be the first to sign up for the next one.

“The biggest thing I’ve learnt is you DON’T need to do HIIT classes to lose weight. Also my new mantra is “Food is KING and Exercise is QUEEN”

  • Fasting regularly in mornings is sustainable. Making sure I don’t over-eat in the evenings after fasting in the morning and identifying that short period after really strenuous exercise where I want to eat a lot but by letting that pass, eating a smaller meal is easier. Identifying this is a body’s reaction is good to know
  • You don’t have to over-exercise to lose weight. You can make small life adjustments and big changes happen if you’re consistent.

How did Leo’s coaching help with your weight loss?
  • Leo was always enthusiastic, and celebrated any wins that we achieved and supported and encouraged us through our struggles. He’s truly been amazing throughout this program, and I’ll most definitely recommend him to anyone wanting to start their weight loss journey.

“Leo’s been extremely supportive and approachable throughout. Any questions I had were answered almost immediately, which made the 8 weeks as easy as they could be. Leo taught us so much about weight loss and the science behind it”

  • Leo is brilliant! I was resistant at first but once I realized how much I needed him, it was great. I felt my questions were answered concisely, in terms I could understand
  • Fantastic! Leo understand the science, but also the psychology and was able to apply both with kindness and humor. For someone who has been on 1,000 diets to still be engaged in this says a lot
  • Despite not yet reaching my goal I still feel that I’m on track and will continue to follow all I have learnt. Leo is a great coach
  • So grateful. Leo’s attention to detail, unwavering support and vast array of knowledge has been so valuable! I’ve truly enjoyed these last 8 weeks (and he said dieting wasn’t enjoyable) but Leo honestly made it easy, fun and most of all sustainable
  • Really good I was not as involved as I should have been but it was a positive and I’l do another program where I’d like to try and get really lean
  • Fun. The Zoom chats were informative but fun in a non serious way, and still getting the message across. It was great to know Leo was available any time to answer questions.

“I had a blast, Leo’s delivery of content was educational and entertaining.

He’s very approachable and I could ask any question without feeling stupid.

Thanks so much, I feel energized and happy”.

Results of the Movement HQ Weight Loss Challenge

The very first Movement HQ Weight Loss Challenge wrapped up in March 2022. Over the eight weeks there was much excitement as our 20 participants tried new foods, developed a real interest in what they ate, took control over meal planning, and kicked some great weight loss goals.

There was also fabulous participation at the final workout where everyone was fired up with focused mindsets, energised bodies and great motivation from the rest of the group.

As we’re pumped and ready to start the next Challenge on 1 May, the leader of this Challenge, Leo Nannetti shares his experience, some weight loss tips and the awesome results seen to date.

What were the results of the January 2022 challenge?

The average amount lost by participants was 4kg over the 8 weeks. The best womens’ and mens’ results were 6kg and 9kg. The most successful participants were those who stuck to the process consistently and diligently.

Leo did the challenge alongside our participants and lost 4kg. He says “I felt really motivated to be doing this with everyone else, it wasn’t hard and I wanted to make sure I was doing what the team was doing.

Because I knew how they were feeling and what they were experiencing, that made it easier for me to guide and advise them”.

What were the results apart from weight loss?

People had more energy, felt healthier, enjoyed being able to feel better in (and without) their clothes, developed a great facial glow, felt more confident, and more in tune with their bodies.

I could also see that people were introducing new eating habits into their family kitchens which was really satisfying to see.

What has been most important is seeing people set up new eating habits after the challenge, and seeing phenomenal changes in peoples’ lifestyles.

Because all the magic really starts when the challenge stops. We are creatures of habit and once we give ourselves the opportunity to develop good eating and exercise habits, that will extend into the longer term.

Why are you running the next Challenge so soon after the last?

I’ve seen that weight gain has become an unexpected side effect of Covid lockdowns and working from home.

And whilst some of us have been able to manage a healthy lifestyle and remain active, unfortunately, for many of us, the “work from home” model has led to an even more sedentary lifestyle.

Also as a general trend we seem to have become disengaged with healthy home food prep leading to a “supersized” lifestyle and Australia having one of the highest rates of obesity in the world.

There are also some exciting new enhancements I’m keen to introduce to make the process even more accessible and easier to fit in with people’s daily lifestyles.

Who is the Challenge for?

The Movement HQ Weight Loss Challenge is designed for people who are looking to:

  • lose 4kg+*
  • know what to eat and when
  • learn about diet and its impact on exercise
  • know the BEST exercise strategy to lose weight
  • learn how to set goals towards their weight loss
  • buy new clothes because their old clothes don’t fit right
  • develop a sustainable eating plan that increases your energy and promotes weight loss.

What’s so special about this Challenge?

This Challenge is so much more than an online diet with one-size fits all workouts.

From my experience as a Personal Trainer and weight loss specialist over many years, I’ve seen that every body is different, everyone leads a different lifestyle and we all have unique drivers that motivate us to lose weight.

And not everyone likes to eat the same things, or do the same kind of workouts, so this is a very personalised program.

Participants are encouraged to take charge of what they eat, based on the foods they like to eat, instead of an app telling them what to do. We want people to own their weight loss and healthy eating journey.

We also take a close look at body fat and muscle mass as these are two different things. When you look at them together you can set a clear strategy that relates not only to what you eat but also how to train.

For example – Gina put on 800g of muscle mass and reduced her fat mass by 2kg, achieving a net loss of 1.2kg total bodyweight.

As we tracked her progress during the Challenge we spoke about her training plan. I encouraged her to focus on muscle building as it was the most appropriate avenue to improve her body composition. The proof is in the pudding as they say.

And Bec lost 6kg of body fat and put on 300g of lean muscle with a net loss of 5.7kg. What an excellent result, Bec is a regular in the gym, I see her almost daily. She’s now taken on Personal Training sessions with Tori Hand who is a master coach.

I play a very active role in advising, guiding, motivating and mentoring everyone. Together with the combined energy of the close knit community I find the process becomes far more enjoyable and results are easier to achieve.

And whilst you can choose what foods and style of diet you’d like to follow within the guidelines, the food you’ll be eating is amazing.

Mover story – Antoine

One of the most satisfying achievements for us as coaches is seeing great results from our clients. Stronger, leaner, more agile bodies – better fitness – happier and healthier minds.

And even better, we love it when trusted relationships develop and continue for years, when coach and client become friends.

Here’s what Antoine Le Tard has to say about his experience training with Movement HQ founder Mark Glanville for the past seven years – and Mark’s approach to helping him reach his goals.

How did you get started?

Antoine: Seven years ago my wife Sam gifted me with a PT session with this legend (Mark Glanville) to help me get fit before 40.

During the warm up of our first session I nearly vomited and passed out. Mark told me I was the first person ever, to nearly pass out during a warm up. He shook his head, laughed at me, said something rude then pushed me through.

How has it been?

Antoine: Seven years later, he’s still being rude and still pushing me through.

I’m much fitter, much stronger, and the healthiest I’ve ever been. I’m a better man, husband and father for having met Mark  seven years ago.

He’s transformed me from the inside out and given me a belief in myself I never thought possible. I’m forever grateful to him.

Mark has not only changed my life, but more than likely also saved my life. And now I have my beautiful family training in his gym and experiencing their own changes which is absolutely amazing.

Mark you’ve still got questionable taste in music, terrible dad jokes and if Movement HQ had an HR team, you’d likely get fired for some of the stuff that falls out of your mouth … But that’s what makes you uniquely you and the life changer you are.

Love ya mate.

Mark: Antoine is a true success story, he came to me wanting to make a change to his health and his lifestyle and he did just that. He felt he had to, for himself and his family.

Antoine’s mental attitude and physical improvements over the 7 years have been nothing short of inspiring and a real credit to his level of focus and application.

I have much respect and love for this man and now his family who are all foundations of the MHQ family.

What kind of training does Antoine do at Movement HQ?

Mark: If you ever needed to know what a particular type of class or training style is like, Antoine’s your guy to ask…

Antoine leads a busy life, juggling work and family, but he’s really consistent and is here almost every morning. He does pretty much everything we have to offer:

  • HIIT
  • Bodyweight
  • Handstand
  • Mish Mash and Smash
  • Animal Flow
  • Functional Mobility
  • Meditation
  • Yoga.

And he also sees me for his weekly Personal Training sessions. Those sessions are about giving him what his mind and body need at that particular time. They often consist of a mixture of calisthenics, kettlebells, Vipr and plyometrics.

On the days where Antoine may be feeling a little burnt out or stressed we focus a little more on mobility and trigger point release.

Our sessions help hold him accountable and moving optimally, and as a result he’s at the top of his game pretty much all year round.

Aside of our sessions together I guess another reason Antoine has been able to maintain consistency in his movement is the variety in his training which helps keep boredom and monotony at bay.

The results from that consistency and all the great habits he’s developed over the years speak for themselves. As Antoine quotes “I’m the fittest, strongest and healthiest I’ve ever been”.

What else does Antoine have to say about Movement HQ?

Antoine: The thing I really love about the gym is that it’s a community where you can show up, and know you’re not going to be judged.

It’s a safe place to explore what it means to be well, and explore different skills, and it’s just an amazing place to be.

It’s not just gym it’s also about laughter. There are times when you can be down one side of the gym and you can hear the laughter roaring from across the other side of the gym.

Movement HQ has incredible trainers and staff, absolutely high fidelity human beings who are also at the top of the range when it comes to the skills they’re teaching. You’re changing lives man. And I know your gym will continue to go from strength to strength.
